How to deal with oily soap.

Occasionally, you may have to deal with oily soap.

Sometimes you will notice that as your soap cools a layer of oil will rise to the top of the block.

This means that you have used too much oil in making the soap, but, unlike having too much fat, this soap might possibly be saved with the following steps:

  1. Remove the excess oil. The best way to do this is to tip over your primary mold and allow the oil to trickle into a container. If possible, leave your mold to drip for at least several hours to ensure you get as much oil out of your block as possible. You can save this oil for future use.
  2. Reheat and liquefy the soap, then stir until trailings appear once more
  3. Re-mold and insulate the soap and allow it to cool for several days
  4. Remove the soap from the mold and allow it to dry for three weeks or more
  5. Check soap for causticity. If it is still caustic following three weeks of curing, throw it away and start over.
